S-African leader dismisses minister
The reshuffle follows mounting criticism of Nkabane’s handling of the appointment process for the Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA) board. She faced backlash for allegedly misleading Parliament, with reports suggesting the board selections were influenced by political connections within the ruling African National Congress (ANC). Among the appointees was Buyambo Mantashe, son of Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe.
Nkabane issued a brief statement on Monday thanking President Ramaphosa for the opportunity to serve, but just minutes later, the president announced the new appointments.
Her dismissal comes after she failed to appear before Parliament last week to explain the controversial board appointments. Instead, she chose to attend a gender-based violence (GBV) event at a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college in the Eastern Cape. Her last-minute apology for missing the parliamentary meeting was rejected by committee chairperson Tebogo Letsie, who said her excuse lacked credibility.
Nkabane had previously told lawmakers the appointments were made by an “independent” panel led by Advocate Terry Motau, but Motau denied having any role in the process. The alleged political interference and nepotism sparked concern, leading to the reversal of the board appointments and ultimately her removal from office.
